Discover the Art of Mosaic Crochet – Free Pattern

Geometric design mosaic crochet pattern

Introduction

Crocheting is a timeless craft that allows us to transform yarn into beautiful, functional pieces of art. One crochet technique that has been captivating crafters worldwide is “Mosaic Crochet.” In this blog post, we’ll introduce you to the enchanting world of mosaic crochet, explain the basics, and share a simple pattern for you to try.

Mosaic crochet is like painting with yarn

It’s as if you’ve picked up a crochet hook and transformed it into a brush, dipped in vibrant hues of yarn, ready to create a tapestry of texture and color. With each stitch, you’re not merely crafting, but you’re composing a symphony of shapes and shades, weaving a visual story that unfolds in the palms of your hands.

The magic of mosaic crochet lies in its accessibility. While the results may appear as if you’ve mastered an ancient and elusive art, the technique is surprisingly approachable, making it a perfect choice for both beginners and experienced crocheters alike. It’s a craft where you can start with a single stitch and gradually unlock the secrets of more intricate designs, step by step.

Materials needed

Before we delve into the technique, gather the following materials:

  1. Yarn: Choose two contrasting colors of yarn, it will be refrenced as yarn A and yarn B. These will create the stunning colorwork effect that defines mosaic crochet. Opt for medium-weight yarn for ease of handling.
  2. Crochet Hook: Select an appropriate hook size based on your yarn’s thickness. You can find this information on the yarn label.

My favourite yarn to crochet is – Scheepjes Catona.

Abreviations

US notations used.

ch – chain
sc – single crochet
BLOsc – single crochet into back loop
FLOdc – double crochet into front loop
st – stitch
slst – slip stitch
start st – starting with next color, ch 1, sc into the same st
end st – sc, ch 1, cut off the yarn OR crochet slst together previous color loop with current color loop at the end of row; leave current color loop longer (for next row slst).

We will crochet always on the right side. At the end of each row we change color. In this pattern only standard stitches of mosaic are used – BLOsc, FLOdc.

Yarn can be cut off at the end of each row or it can be stretched on the back side and crocheted together (depends on your project).
