Hello, fellow crochet lovers! Today, we’re diving into a fun and creative project—crocheting a simple bookmark using the mosaic overlay crochet technique. Whether you’re a crochet beginner or someone looking to try something new, this project is perfect for you. Not only does it allow you to play with colors and patterns, but it also makes a thoughtful handmade gift or a lovely addition to your own bookshelf.
Ready to get started? Grab your yarn, a hook, and let’s create something beautiful together!
What is Mosaic Crochet?
Before we dive into the steps, let’s quickly talk about mosaic crochet. It’s a fabulous technique that uses contrasting colors to create intricate, geometric designs. It might look complex, but don’t worry—it’s much simpler than it appears! In this project, we’ll work row by row, and you’ll only use one color per row.
Materials Needed
Gather the following supplies:
- Yarn – Choose two contrasting colors for the best mosaic effect. A light and a dark color work wonderfully together.
- A crochet hook suitable for your chosen yarn.
- Scissors.
I used Scheepjes Maxi Sugar Rush yarn (254 Moon Rock (A) and 404 English Tea (B)) and hook 1.25 mm.
Size of my bookmark: 19 x 2,7 cm
Abreviations
US notations used.
ch – chain
sc – single crochet
st – stitch
slst – slip stitch
BLOsc – single crochet into back loop
FLOdc – double crochet into front loop
start st – make a slipknot on your hook, insert your hook into the first stitch, yarn over with the new yarn, and pull through to create a secure attachment.
end st – sc, cut the yarn off, leave longer tail
We will crochet always on the right side (except one row for edging).

After finishing the bookmark, trim the yarn ends on top edge, and tie up the ends on the bottom edge.
I do recommend blocking the bookmark.

Finishing Touches
Block your bookmark to shape it nicely. I have blocked using iron and wet towel since I used 100 % cotton. Use blocking techniques suitable for your yarn. Check out this video to see this blocking type:
You now have a beautiful crochet bookmark!

Tips for Success
– Tension Matters: Try to keep your tension consistent throughout the project, especially when doing the mosaic part. Tight tension can make it difficult to work into the dropped stitches.
– Choosing Colors: Opt for high contrast between your two yarn colors to make the mosaic design really stand out.
